To be Nothing is to have Everything

February 2007
I share with you a dream that was shared with me by one who wishes to remain anonymous.   She said she is often taught lessons in this manner, and quite often these lessons are not for her alone, but apply to all of God’s children.  For this reason they are shared with you, for your encouragement. You are so loved by God! If only you saw how precious you are to Him! Do not be discouraged if you are not aware of His great love in this life… as this act of faith gives you greater merit and God more glory. Just trust He sees everything.
“I was standing by the side of the road, when a carriage pulled up and stopped. It was an old fashioned carriage pulled by horses, similar to those seen in elegant Victorian movies. I got in and it pulled away. Inside was a handsome gentleman of obvious wealth and nobility, and I seated myself next to him. I immediately assumed he was a bridegroom on the way to his wedding, due to the manner in which he was dressed, and because he seemed to be very happy.  I immediately supposed I must be needed to help with the wedding, perhaps they needed a maid, or someone to clean and wash dishes. I didn’t ask any questions, as I was quite content in just being there, and knew I would be given instruction as to my purpose when he thought me relevant.
My mind was busy with thoughts of how I could be helpful when we arrived at our unknown destination, when the fine gentleman turned towards me and exclaimed “How I love you! Don’t you know that we are going to our wedding?” I looked at him with absolute astonishment. “Me?” Inwardly I looked at myself, so very plain, not only in my features, but in my attire, and even my personality, there was nothing to draw anyone’s attention.  So accustomed was I to passing unnoticed, it was my accepted, even preferred, place in life.  I gave myself no thought at all, and did not expect anyone else to. There was nothing there a gentleman of this stature would find of interest, so when he did, it was unimaginable.
Reading my thoughts, he went on. “It is because you are nothing, that I find you so beautiful and irresistible! I am everything, and as you are nothing, I can be your all!”
Upon awaking, this soul realized the handsome gentleman was Our Lord, and has found much consolation in this dream, and the fact that we are all so loved by God in spite of our nothingness…  more so because of it!
Dear friends, please realize we are ALL so loved and desired by Our God, and He wishes to carry us away with Him, if only we make room in our hearts! It is only when we fill it with our own self importance, our own plans, our own loves, that it is too crowded for Him then to do as He would like. How does He clear this room of our heart? Through the fire of His Sacred Heart… as He presses us close to His Heart, we will feel the burning flame, the thorns. In the language of this world, this translates to the prickings we receive from others, whether it be our spouse, our friends, or strangers… they wound our self love, they scorch with pain our pride. Are you misunderstood? Is another preferred to you? Endure it, accept it, embrace it, dear friends! This is the action of our most loving Lord, pulling us towards Him, teaching us that we are nothing. Do not fight it, because it is true. He alone is the author of everything good. Do you have a good thought? He is the author. Do you have talent or beauty? He gave it to you.  Did you say yes to Him rather than no, and so you are pleased with your good choice? He gave you the strength to say yes, and so it goes. When we fully realize this, we will no longer feel the pricks of the thorns, as we fully acknowledge our unworthiness of anything more.
And this is when we will be surprised! Because we are beloved by God, not because of our goodness, but because of His! And because He is all good and all merciful, His greatest desire is to give us everything. So dear friends, let us pray and get out of the way!
AMEN.
